Fundus examination assesses retinal health using a high-power condensing lens in combination with a slit lamp — the first line of examination in virtually every vision examination room. Fundus lenses are used to obtain comprehensive retinal images while the patient is seated at the slit lamp, stabilised by the chin rest.
The field of view and image magnification of lenses of the same design are inversely related: a wider field of view suits general examination or peripheral retinal imaging, while a high-magnification lens suits critical inspection and monitoring of patients with retinal defects.
The lens power determines the required working distance from the patient's eye. The resulting image is indirect — inverted and reversed. All Volk fundus examination lenses are manufactured with Volk's patented double aspheric design, minimising peripheral image distortion and improving depth of field. The unique patented groove design in the lens ring provides a comfortable, stable grip and facilitates easy handling. Since 1956, Volk lenses have been the industry standard for retinal examination worldwide.
